Artifact i

This artifact, the Word Study Assignment, comes from C&T 743: Writing and Spelling Development. Our objective was to be able to use theory and research learned in the course for instruction. The course offered critical insight on application of certain standards that are used throughout common core. This artifact specifically addresses "Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known affix is added to a known word (e.g., agreeable/disagreeable, comfortable/uncomfortable, care/careless, heat/preheat). c. Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root (e.g., company, companion)" in the Illinois State Standards.

In this artifact, I used the Word Studies Assignment to demonstrate a quality assessment of my students understanding of words exhibits my understanding of specific student needs. I also discuss what I would like to practice and focus on to form good habits among her speech and reading as well as an outline of how I will guide her through these practices. This assignment helped me accumulate critical awareness to look for in my students’ literacy skills. I used this practice with a student this year who has been learning English for 2 years and struggles at the 4th grade reading level.

The next artifact comes from C&T 741: Comprehension and Study Strategies for Use with Multiple Texts. This artifact shows a detailed outline of the learning process throughout a unit, how to implement vocabulary through Greek and Latin roots words, and shows patterns between texts to demonstrate similarities and differences students can recognize between types of writing. In the artifact, I used five different types of informative texts along with a writing response, questions, games, a quiz/ test and differentiated learning techniques. This specifically addresses the Illinois State Standard "Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content".

The objective is to have students exposed to the various amounts of informative texts available and have them choose a topic they are interested from a pre-selected bundle in which they will research and write about. As studied throughout the course of C&T 741, better Greek and Latin root recognition among students improves understanding and comprehension of the text, so it is important to practice this skill along with informative writing with as much consistent exposure as possible for optimal student learning.

Apply content and discipline-specific knowledge as reflected in state and/or national standards. CAEP 1.3
