Artifact i

Use research and evidence to develop school environments that support and assess P-12 students’ learning and to support professional practice specific to their discipline. CAEP 1.2, CAEP 3.5

For my first artifact, I am using the Module 4 and 5 reflection assignments from C&T 807 Multicultural Education. The focus of C&T 807 was multiculturalism in education. We discussed the vast disparities between people of color, women, special education, and devoutly religious student experiences in the classroom. I have chosen the Module 4 and 5 reflection artifact to show a connection between researches completed and discussing cultural capital and sexuality, and the evidence to support students in the classroom who experience these subjects of inequality. The issues of these artifacts address definitions of culture capital and sexuality, and highlight practices of inclusion in the classroom as well as proper support systems for students.

I feel this artifact strongly demonstrate my ability to continue practicing change and creating progressive learning environments for my students. The overall theme of C&T 807 addresses inclusion of all students. Our education system has not properly addressed the vast diversity of our population and continues to narrowly select who is deemed successful. We have tied these into readings done in class and have written and designed responses that address these differences as well. Students have become confident sharing their stories and messages that are often overlooked in our curriculum.

My second artifact to address the CAEP standards 1.2 is a collection of three discussion scenarios that come from C&T 743: Writing and Spelling Development Instruction. In this course, our objective was to study writing and spelling and use research done in the course to create effective learning in language arts classrooms.

The collection of discussion scenarios throughout the course demonstrate how I was able to use evidence based research methods to develop a classroom environment that again included all students of different backgrounds and styles of learning. For example, I support leveled spelling groups in the Words Their Way program and have used it in my classroom since I began teaching close to 5 years ago. In addition, I use the self-regulated strategy development, SRSD model, to again vary the pace students learn and write in the classroom.
